Once there was, and once there wasn't.
There was no one but our kind God.
An old woman had seven daughters, some tall and some half-grown.
The seventh, who was the prettiest of them all, was named Namaki.
They lived at the edge of town, in a very large house that had eight doors.
In the old days they made doors of walnut wood and dropped a bar behind them,
so that nobody could push them open.
Every night at bedtime it was one daughter's turn to shut the doors of the house.
The night it was Namaki's turn, she shut the doors one by one until she came to the eighth, but she couldn't be bothered to drop its bar.
She said to herself: what is there in our house but seven girls of marrying age, that a thief would come and carry anything off?
She went and laid her head on her pillow and fell asleep.
Namaki's mother was old, and her sleep was light.
In the middle of the night she woke to the sound of snoring and great heavy breaths!
Namaki's mother said: who has come to our house at this hour, who breathes and snorts like a div?
She got up and looked — may your eyes never see such a day — and saw that a rough, unshaven div had come into the house.
Her heart came loose, and she said: you see, that wretched Namaki hasn't shut one of the doors.
An uninvited guest has come into the house.
Her six sisters were awake too, but they didn't dare come out from under their quilts.
In the thick of all this, the div raised his voice: ho to you, ho to you, torn shoes to you, someone comes to your house — have you no room for him?
Namaki's mother said: Namaki dear, Namaki dear. You've made our house a div's house, Namaki, seven doors you shut, Namaki, and one you left open, Namaki!
Quick now!
Go and open the sitting room for the div!
Trembling with fear, Namaki got up and went and opened the sitting room, led the div inside, and hurried back to her own bed.
Her heart was beating in her chest like a sparrow's.
After a little while the house went quiet, and Namaki thought it was over.
Again the div raised his voice: ho to you, ho to you, torn shoes to you, someone comes to your house — have you no bread for him?
Namaki's mother said: Namaki dear, Namaki dear. May they cut off your hair, Namaki, seven doors you shut, Namaki, and one you left open, Namaki!
Quick now!
Get up and make supper for the div!
Poor Namaki got up.
In the middle of the night, she made khagineh.
Her hands shook, and her tears dripped into the pan.
She sprinkled water on the stale bread and carried it to the div.
The div sniffed and said: mmm, what a good smell!
The div made the whole lot into one mouthful — not even a bite to him — as though he'd eaten nothing at all.
After a little while he raised his voice again: ho to you, ho to you, torn shoes to you, someone comes to your house — have you no bed for him?
Namaki's mother said: Namaki dear, Namaki dear. May you never keep a marriage bed, Namaki, seven doors you shut, Namaki, and one you left open, Namaki!
Get up and lay out bedding for the guest!
So Namaki got up and spread out the termeh quilt and the velvet mattress and the satin pillow that had been her mother's wedding dowry, for the div to sleep in.
Her mother watched from the dark and said nothing.
The div threw himself into the bed and let out a sigh that shook the house.
Then he let his voice loose: ho to you, ho to you, torn shoes to you, someone comes to your house — have you no one to tell him a story?
Namaki's mother said: Namaki dear, Namaki dear. May your fortune burn, Namaki, seven doors you shut, Namaki, and one you left open, Namaki!
Get up and go tell the guest a story.
Wretched Namaki got up and went and sat by the div's bed and told him a story.
She began with once there was and once there wasn't, and told every story she knew.
Her voice shook, but the more she told, the rounder the div's eyes grew.
About two hours later the div got up, threw Namaki into his sack, and was out the door.
Namaki saw she was in a bad spot, and when they had gone a little way, she said to the div: put me down, I have to go to the bathroom.
The div set the sack on the ground and took Namaki out so she could go to the bathroom.
Namaki saw that it was dark and the div's eye could not see a thing.
Little by little she slipped away and climbed up the shoulder of the mountain.
However much the div called out: Namaki, where are you?
Namaki gave no answer.
Namaki reached the top of the mountain, took a great rock in both hands, and rolled it down onto the div.
The rock rolled and rolled and landed square on the div's head, and that was the end of the div.
Namaki ran the whole way she had come without stopping for breath, and reached home before dawn.
The moment her mother and her six sisters saw her, they wept for joy and threw their arms around her.
From that night on, Namaki dropped the bar on the eighth door first of all, and only then went to sleep.
Our story has reached its end; the crow never reached its home.
We went up — there was yogurt. We came down — there was dugh. And that was our story.
